UC Applications and Bandwidth
Dynamic and granular control of shared enterprise resources such as bandwidth is becoming increasingly important as enterprise customers deploy various unified communications and collaboration applications. There is more than one reason why customers care about WAN bandwidth for their UC applications. Cost savings is the number one reason for companies operating in countries or regions where WAN bandwidth is generally expensive.

Several customers are looking to consolidate data and voice/video traffic on IP network. For them, constraining the amount of bandwidth used by UC to limit the impact on other network-based applications is a business requirement. For example, they require that video calls between their WAN sites should not slow down SAP or Citrix applications. As video becomes more common, some customers want to allocate different amounts of bandwidth to room system video traffic vs. desktop video traffic.

Additional business requirements include managing service degradation when multiple UC applications share the same WAN pipe, or providing alternate path for voice service when the IP network becomes congested. Our recently concluded survey shows that the IT managers want to ensure that adequate operational procedures are put in place to manage the UC traffic in presence of Denial of Service attacks, network infrastructure outage or data center outage.
